EXEMPTION IN MEDICINE”
The Lyceum of the Philippines University(LPU) has joined
hands in offering a BS Degree in Psychology at PATHE Academy Campus
wwww.patheacademy.org in Wallawatte Col 6.The programme was launched officially
Jan 2015.The programme is delivered on full time basis weekdays. This is a
great opportunity for those who are in the industry and those who plan to
migrate or pursue further studies.
Dr. Sanjayadeve de Silva Munasinghe, Chairman, Pathe Academy,
said that this road to study medicine is open after following a degree
programme in Psychology offered by the Academy, through its principals LPU.
“This degree in Psychology provided by LPU through Pathe automatically opens
the doors to study medicine at Medical Universities across the globe.
Especially in Philippines with 2 years exemption where you can finish your
medical degree in exactly 4 years,” he said.
This would make a total of six years, ie from entering PATHE
at 18 years after finishing the A/Ls, to follow a two year Psychology degree
programme offered by LPU as a first step, and lastly, an automatic admission to
Philippines medical schools upon completing the Psychology degree programme to
complete one’s Doctor of Medicine degree in a four year degree programme.
The medium of instruction is in English. LPU which was
founded by Dr. Jose P. Laurel, a former president of the Philippines, is an
internationally recognized university, said Munasinghe. He further said that
there is demand, both here and abroad, not only for doctors, but for
psychologists as well.
Munasinghe said that the minimum entry requirement for the Psychology
degree is five credits in the GCE O/L, inclusive of a credit in mathematics. The
total programme is 2 years for those with GCE AL and 3 years for those with GCE
OL. We also have other degree programmes in Psychology offered by Russian
Universities where It’s not compulsory to have a pass in English to follow this
degree programme. “English will be taught to students at Pathe itself, ie for
those who find it difficult to understand the language, that opportunity is
also there for such,” said Munasinghe.
Students are encouraged to apply for exemptions with Prior
learning experience. We also have Psychology degree programmes which are
delivered online added Dr.Munasinghe. He said that the course fee for the
psychology programme is approximately Rs 800,000; while for the medical degree,
US$ 20,000 paid in installments every 6 months, under a special payment
agreement ONLY for PATHE students enrolled for the January batch. Pathe has in
its roll, a lecture panel in relation to the psychology degree programme.
Professors from LPU, will, from time to time also visit Pathe, to ensure that
their standards are adhered to The degree programme conducted by Pathe on behalf of LPU and
LPU per se, is also recognized by the University Grants Commission of Sri
Lanka, in addition to the international recognition that such degree programmes
do carry.
Psychology
is a modern field; And, those who only want to be psychologists, there is
plenty of scope in the West and even in Sri Lanka for such professionals at
various disciplines, be it in the industry, schools or in the “HR” departments
in companies-graduates find work in a wide range of fields including
healthcare, education, the legal system, business and management, sports
training, workplace practice and the media. The students can be transferred to
the overseas institute to the corresponding stage in psychology at anytime.
Clinical exposure to undergraduates is provided at Park
Hospital, Colombo which has a psychiatric ward. Park Hospital is a sister
